Pearl oyster shell (pinctada maxima) painted in oils with a view of a warship off a coast within a lifebelt inscribed ' H.M.S. JUNO'.
The lifebelt is surmounted by a naval crown and surrounded by the the flags of the USA, France and the UK (Union Flag). Inscribed on a ribbon below: ‘1917 TRINCOMALEE – CEYLON 1918’. The flags on this and the related shell ZBA4546 represent the allies during World War I. There is a hole in the shell for suspension.
The shells belonged to Henry Wright, Able Seaman aboard 'Juno' and, according to his family, were painted by him.
