Bowl

Earthenware bowl, transfer-printed in blue. In the centre, a portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805), inscribed above 'NELSON'; around the portrait 'ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN TO DO HIS DUTY'; below 'Shew me my Country's Foes, the Hero cry'd,/He saw-He fought-He conquer'd- and he di'd.' This is offset from the centre and balanced by scrolling decoration on the right side. On the outside of the bowl, two transfers each of a view of a naval battle: 'VICTORY' above; the portrait of Nelson; an inscription with a naval trophy above: 'HORATIO LORD VISCOUNT/NELSON/VICE ADMIRAL OF THE WHITE/Knight of the Order of the Bath/Duke of Bronte in Sicily/Grand Cross of the Order of Ferdi/nand and of Merit and Knight of/the imperial Order of the/Crescent', 'Copenhagen', 'Nile', 'Trafalgar'. Round the interior of the rim is a border of foliage and trophies of arms and a laurel band. The transfers are cut to the shape of the bowl.
