Jug

Earthenware jug, transfer-printed in blue, with fluted moulding at the neck and base. On one side a portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) inscribed above 'NELSON', around the portrait 'ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN TO DO HIS DUTY' below 'Shew me my Country's Foes, the Hero cry'd,/He saw-He fought-He conquer'd and he di'd.' On the other side, a representation of a naval action, 'VICTORY' above. There is an inscription opposite the handle, below a naval trophy: 'HORATIO LORD VISCOUNT/NELSON/VICE-ADMIRAL OF THE WHITE./Knight of the Order of the Bath/Duke of Bronte in Sicily/Grand Cross of the Order of Ferdi/nand and of Mer[i]t and Knight of/the imperial Order of the/Crescent', 'Copenhagen, N[il]e, Trafalgar'. The transfers have been cut to fit the shape of the jug. Around the neck is a border of foliage and trophies of arms, and another border of laurel runs around the inside. The handle is decorated with transfers.
