Jug

Earthenware jug, transfer-printed in blue with a brown painted rim. On one side a portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) inscribed above 'NELSON', around the portrait 'ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN TO DO HIS DUTY' below 'Shew me my Country's Foes, the Hero cry'd,/He saw-He fought-He conquer'd and he di'd.' On the other side, a naval action, 'VICTORY' above. There is an inscription opposite the handle, below a naval trophy (cutting the transfer to shape partly obscures it): 'HORATIO LORD VISCOUNT/NELSON/VICE-ADMIRAL OF THE WHITE./Knight of the Order of the Bath/ Duke of Bro[n]te in Sicily/Grand Cross of the Or[d]er of Ferdi/nand and o[f] M[erit] and K[n]ight of/the imperial [O]rder of [th]e C[r]e[sc]ent', 'Copenhagen, N[ile, T]rafalgar'. The transfers are on a background of leaf decoration and there is a border of floral scrolls and trophies of arms running around the neck, with another border of laurel on the inside. 'John Hyde 1807' is painted in blue around the neck.
