Jug
Earthenware, octagonal-shaped moulded jug, transfer-printed in blue. Parts of the transfers have been lost because they have been cut to fit the jug. On one side a portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) inscribed above 'NELSON', around the portrait 'ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN TO DO HIS DUTY' below '[Shew] me my Country's Foes, [the Hero cry'd,]/[He saw-]He faught [sic]-He [conquer'd-and he di'd.]' On the other side, a naval battle; 'VICTORY' inscribed above. There is an inscription opposite the handle, with a naval trophy above 'HORATIO LORD VISCOUNT/NELSON/VICE ADMIRAL OF THE WHITE/ Knight of the Order of the Bath/Duke of Bronte in Sicily/Grand Cross of the Order of Ferdi/nand and of Merit and Knight of/the imperial Order of the/Crescent', 'Copenhagen', 'Nile', 'Trafalgar'. The transfers are surrounded by scrolling foliage. A border of foliage with trophies of arms runs around the neck, with another border of laurel on the inside. The handle is decorated with a fragment of transfer including part of an inscription.
