Silver tankard

A silver tankard, with gadrooned cover and shell thumb-mark, bands of reeding round the base and centre; the interior is gilded. On the front of the tankard a central reserve bordered with rope twist and flanked by flags, with cannon, barrels and shot etc., with the following inscription: '1808 Presented by Rear Admiral JOHN FAITHFUL FORTESCUE, TO MR SAMUEL FOLLETT, in Token of his Regard, and in remembrance that he learnt from him the first rudiments of his profession IN H.M.S. DISPATCH and afterwards sailed with him in the SOMERSET and the SALISBURY.' Hallmarked: London, 1807-8, maker's initials C.H. possibly Charles Hollinshed.
