Regional flag, Åland Islands
The regional flag of the Åland Islands. It is made from synthetic bunting with a cotton hoist and is machine stitched with a rope and clip attached. The design shows a yellow Scandinavian cross, with a red cross superimposed, on a sky blue field. A label on the hoist is inscribed: 'FINN MARIN R Tikkerila Oy 4'. The flag was flown from 'Cutty Sark' with flags of other participating nations during the Congress of the International Association of Cape Horners at the National Maritime Museum in June 1978.
The design reflects the history of the islands as a province of Sweden. After a period from 1808-1921 under Russian rule, they became a part of Finland in 1921 but retained some local autonomy. From 1992 the usage of the flag was altered and it is now a civil and state flag and ensign.
