Mug
Earthenware mug, transfer-printed in brown with ochre painted rim and sides of the handle. On one side a portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) inscribed above 'NELSON', around the portrait 'ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN TO DO HIS DUTY' below 'Shew me my Country's Foes, the Hero cry'd,/He saw-He fought-He conquer'd and he di'd.' On the other side, a naval action, 'VICTORY' above. There is an inscription opposite the handle, with a naval trophy above: 'HORATIO LORD VISCOUNT/NELSON/VICE-ADMIRAL OF THE WHITE/ Knight of the Order of the Bath/Duke of Bronte in Sicily/Grand Cross of the Order of Ferdi/nand and of Merit and Knight of/the imperial Order of the /Crescent', 'Copenhagen', 'Nile', 'Trafalgar'. A scrolling floral border with trophies of arms runs around the inside and there is a laurel band down the handle.
