Jug

An earthenware jug commemorating Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). It is transfer-printed in black and hand-coloured in red, pink and green, with a mourning figure of Britannia holding a shield with Nelson's arms and a Viscount's coronet above. On her left is the British lion and her shield and spear. Behind her are the French and Spanish ensigns and the stern of a ship. A wreath hangs on a tree between the ensigns. Below the transfer is the inscription 'Britannia leaning upon his Lordship's armorial ensigns, accompanied by her Lion, protecting the Union Shield and Spear, mourns for the loss of her illustrious Hero, LORD NELSON' on a ribbon above 'TRAFALGAR'. On the other side, a merchant ship under sail with a red pennant and the Union Flag at the stern. Below, is a gun, ensigns, barrels and bails, the bundles marked 'No 43 EB', 'No 6 W'. 'SUCCESS TO TRADE' is inscribed on a ribbon draped across these symbols. The jug has a red-painted rim and foot and painted decoration on the handle.
