Teapot

Black basalt teapot commemorating Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) and Admiral of the Fleet Richard Howe (1726-1799) with moulded decoration. It has gothic tracery around the base and three panels separated by pillars on either side. The side panels are decorated with moulded vine sprays and on the centre panel on each side is a shell in relief. On one side the shell bears a design of a monument consisting of an obelisk on a base. This is flanked by Britannia and Victory inscribing 'HOWE, NELSON' on a shield. The other shell has a ribbon inscribed 'PATRIOTS' placed across the staff of a British ensign, flying above naval trophies and two inverted foreign flags. Flanking the trophies a pyramid and crocodile representing the Battle of the Nile and a fortress representing the Battle of Copenhagen. A key pattern runs around the rim of the teapot and there are scallop shells on the spout and handle. The lid is decorated with convolvulus flowers and was originally hinged with a flower-shaped knop.
