Nazi German merchant ensign (1935-1945)
Nazi German merchant ensign, pattern 1935-45, from SS 'Rheingold'. The flag is made of wool bunting, with a cotton hoist and is machine sewn at the ends (the sides are selvedge edges). The flag has a red field with a white disc in the centre bearing a black swastika. All of the design has been printed onto the surface of the fabric. A rope and clip are attached for hoisting.
SS 'Rheingold' was captured on 25 October 1939 by HMS 'Delhi', under Captain Louis Henry Keppel Hamilton (1890-1957).
