Nelson to Lady Hamilton, 1801, on leaving the squadron. Nelson expresses mixed feelings about leaving his “little squadron” but seems mostly impatient to get off the ship.

Nelson to Lady Hamilton, Amazon, 20 Oct 1801, (Harrison I, 101; extract in Nicolas, IV, 516), on leaving the squadron. Nelson expresses mixed feelings about leaving his “little squadron” but seems mostly impatient to get off the ship. He jokes about the idea of Lady Hamilton rowing him to shore, “the Beautiful Emma, rowing a one armed Admiral in a boat, it will certainly be caricatured”. He complains about a Yorkshire man asking him for £300 to set up a school: “are these people mad or do they take me for quite a fool”.
