Jug

Pink lustre jug with a large curved lip, transfer-printed in black with a view of Wearmouth bridge inscribed below 'A WEST VIEW of the IRON BRIDGE over the WEAR/under the Patronage of R. BURDON Esq MP/Span 230 feet Ht 100', 'Cast 214 Tons Wt 46', 'DIXON & CO Sunderland 1813.' On the other side, an oval portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805), red ensigns and trophies behind and surmounted by Fame with ships in the background. 'TRAFALGAR' is inscribed above the portrait. 'The Briton mourn (sic) what else can Britons do/While Bleeding Nelson rises to her view./Still is there cause for Triumph when she shews/The captured colours of our Vanquished foes./And greater still when FAME was heard to say/All all were Nelsons on that glorious DAY.' The initials 'JMC' are hand-painted below the lip and a verse within a wreath of flowers reads: 'Forget me not/The sailor tost in stormy seas/Though far his bark may roam,/Still hears a voice in every breeze/That wakens thoughts of home:/He thinks upon his distant friends,/His wife, his humble cot;/And from his inmost heart ascends/The prayer-Forget me not! Barten.'
