Thornycroft, John I., & Co Ltd

The records were deposited on loan between 1966 and 1979 and deposits are continuing. The collection includes an extensive collection of plans, while the Department of Pictures holds a large collection of photographic negatives and prints. The technical and commercial records are described here. They include: bound volumes of general correspondence, tender letters and specifications, files of trial reports and other technical information for the Chiswick yard, ca.1880 to ca.1900; files on individual vessels and designs, specifications, trials and some general files for the Woolston yard, ca.1900 to 1950; trial records and technical notes relating to the Hampton boatyard, ca.1914 to 1964, and similar material on vessels built at Singapore but designed in London. There is also correspondence on an attempt in the 1920s to set up a shipyard in Brazil. In addition there are records of vessels designed but not built by the firm. Apart from the main shipbuilding records, there are files of correspondence, memoranda and notebooks, 1880 to 1960, relating to Sidney W. Barnaby (d.1925) and Kenneth C Barnaby (d.1970), successively chief naval architects to the firm; incidental records on engineering at Reading and Basingstoke; and records of previous occupants of the yards at Woolston and Northam, including the firm of Day Summers, 1880 to 1920.
