Blue jasper plate with applied white relief decoration depicting Captain Matthew Flinders (1774-1814) in naval uniform and his ship 'HMS Investigator' within an olive wreath border. Inscribed in relief above the figure is 'CAPT. MATTHEW FLINDERS R.N.' and below 'BORN MARCH 16 1774'. Printed in black on the reverse is 'To commemorate the Bicentenary of the Birth of MATTHEW FLINDERS, who, in the sloop "Investigator" circumnavigated Australia 1801-1803.' The maker's mark is impressed on the base. The plate was made for sale in Australia only.
