Earthenware mess bowl transfer-printed in blue with a rope border and a line of stud link chain cable. A ribbon inscribed 'MESS' encloses the words 'H.M. Royal Navy'. Before 1907 naval messes had to buy their own crockery and such items were manufactured for this market.
