Casket
A straw work casket made by a Napoleonic prisoner of war held in England.
The hinged lid has a mirror inside and secures a fall front. The top section of the inner box is inset with five lidded compartments each pulled open by a loop of green tape. The sixth compartment has a curved base decorated with coloured straw and no lid. The front of the container contains four small drawers with a long drawer in the base. The latter contains six compartments, the central two open (one of these has a glass cover), the others are lidded. A panel in the centre of the small drawers is hinged at the lower edge and opens to reveal a compartment with two more drawers at the back.
The drawers have small bone knobs as handles. The sides of the smaller compartments and the edges of the lids are covered with pink paper. The remaining surfaces are decorated with straw marquetry.
Prisoners were encouraged to produce straw marquetry rather than items such as hats, to avoid competing with established local industries.
