Cup

Coffee cup made for Sir George Nares' Arctic Expedition of 1875. The cup is white glazed and transfer-printed in blue with an elaborate rope border and the expedition badge - a polar bear within a garter. The garter is inscribed 'ARCTIC EXPEDITION 1875'. On the base is printed 'DISCOVERY' ('HMS Discovery' 1874 was one of the expedition's two vessels) and on an anchor 'ARCTIC EXPEDITION 1875', W. T. COPELAND & SONS'.
