Tureen
Small two-handled tureen lacking lid and stand, made for Sir George Nares' Arctic Expedition of 1875. It is white glazed and transfer-printed in black with an elaborate rope border, simple rope rims and the badge of the expedition - a polar bear within a garter. The moulded handles are picked out in a leaf design. The garter is inscribed 'ARCTIC EXPEDITION 1875'. On the base is printed 'DISCOVERY' ('HMS Discovery' 1874 was one of the expedition's two vessels). An anchor printed on the base is inscribed 'ARCTIC EXPEDITION 1875', 'W.T.COPELAND AND SONS'.
