Dinner plate, part of a service belonging to HRH the Duke of Clarence, later William IV (1765-1837). In the centre, surrounded by gold decoration is a grisaille painting showing a figure representing Hope, in classical dress, walking along a seashore, holding a very small anchor in her left hand, her right hand indicating a ship under sail in the background. The plate has a scalloped rim and a border painted in blue, gold and white. The maker's mark 'Flight' with a crown and crescent is painted on the base. The service is often erroneously described as the 'Nelson Service' and said to depict Lady Hamilton's 'attitudes'. It is also referred to as the 'Hope Service'.
