Earthenware plate printed with a oval colour portrait of Edward, Prince of Wales, later Edward VIII (1894-1972) in naval uniform. The portrait is surrounded by a garter belt inscribed 'HONI . SOIT . QUI . MAL . Y . PENSE'. The Prince of Wales's badge and motto 'ICH DIEN' are shown above, shields and banners behind the portrait. Inscribed at the top 'TO COMMEMORATE THE INVESTITURE H.R.H. EDWARD . PRINCE OF WALES' below 'BY H.I.M. KING GEORGE V AT CARNAVON CASTLE JULY 13TH 1911'. The whole is flanked by olive branches. On the edge are shown the arms of Wales in colour with the inscription 'God bless the Prince of Wales' and rose branches, thistles, and shamrocks. The plate has a moulded, gilt rim. The maker's mark 'ROYAL SEMI PORCELAINE' is printed on the base with the retailer's mark 'WARING & GILLOW LTD OXFORD STREET LONDON W.'
