Plate
A white porcelain plate, printed in the centre with a monochrome portrait of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (1921-) in naval uniform, the image based on a photograph. The edge of the plate is gilt and it has a coloured border, decorated with roses, and the Duke's monogram and coat of arms and the star of the Order of the Garter inscribed: 'HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE'. On the base ''HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS, THE PRINCE PHILIP, DUKE OF EDINBURGH, KG First Gentleman of the Realm. To commemorate the sixtieth Birthday of His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh, on 10th June 1981. Patron and Trustee of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and holder of a distinguished Naval Career during the Second World War. His Royal Highness is a leading sportsman in many fields including yachting, polo, and in recent years International Four in Hand team driving. A limited edition of 2,500 of which this is No. 294.' The maker's mark is printed on the base.
