28-inch telescope at the Old Royal Observatory
This watercolour of the 28-inch telescope was painted by Christopher White when he was artist in residence at the at the Old Royal Observatory, part of a scheme organised by the Education department in 1997. It shows the foreshortened telescope, eye-end towards the viewer, in its massive mount under the dome of the Great Equatorial Building. Shadowy figures of Museum visitors, including a child, appear to the right of the image, behind the barrier. The image reflects both the engagement of the public with the displays at the Royal Observatory and the use and appearance of the historic 28-inch telescope in the late 20th century.
