Ice in the River Thames off Gravesend, 1895
The River Thames at Gravesend during the prolonged frost in February 1895. A photograph taken at low tide from the Royal Terrace Pier showing the foreshore near the Town Pier covered in ice. The photographer is looking upriver towards Northfleet Hope. The collier Eastwood (1870), seen from just ahead of her starboard beam, is at moorings in Gravesend Reach and the tug Challenge (1884) is anchored just offshore to the left of centre. The Tilbury Hotel is in the right background.
