Ice in the River Thames off Gravesend, 1895
The River Thames at Gravesend during the prolonged frost in February 1895. A view from Custom House Pier looking east down Gravesend Reach towards the estuary, with a wooden pier and the foreshore covered in lumps of ice. In the middle distance is the Corporation of the City of London Port Sanitary Authority hulk Hygeia (1865), formerly the tug Robert Bruce (1865), seen from abaft her starboard beam. A number of colliers or general cargo ships are at anchor or moored to buoys with Tilbury in the background.
