Ice in Gravesend Reach, River Thames

A 12x10 negative. Gravesend Reach, River Thames, during the prolonged frost in February 1895. The photographer is looking upstream towards Northfleet Hope and Tilbury Ness from the foreshore below Clifton Marine Parade at Gravesend. Lumps of ice are on the foreshore in the foreground. At anchor in Gravesend Reach are the short sea cargo vessel Edward Eccles (1872) and the tanker Baku Standard (1893), both seen from wide off the starboard bow. An unidentified brig is anchored close inshore. The light at Tilbury Ness can be seen in the distance.

A copyright entry form for this photograph was completed on 1 March 1895 and sent to Stationers' Hall in London (see COPY 1/419/653/2 at the National Archives).
