Unveiling of a statue of Queen Victoria at Gravesend, 1897
A 12x10 negative. A group portrait of dignitaries in front of the Municipal Technical Institute in Darnley Road, Gravesend, during celebrations for the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. The statue was presented to the town as a personal gift from the Mayor George Matthews Arnold (1826-1908). The unveiling was performed by General Sir Charles Warren (1840-1927), commanding the Thames District at this time. Both men can be seen standing in front of the statue. The white helmets in the foreground belong to the guard of honour formed by the 7th Battalion of the Rifle Brigade. The Institute had been opened by Princess Beatrice of Battenberg in 1893.
