The Nelson Inn at Gravesend, circa 1875
A whole plate negative. The Nelson Inn at the corner of Windmill Street and New Road at Gravesend, with a group of local people gathered for the camera. The view is looking west towards Northfleet.
The publican of the Nelson Inn at this time was Charles Heath Barrett (1833-1878). Demolition of the Nelson Inn and surrounding buildings started in March 1876 to make way for improvements to the town centre. This negative is a companion to G2337, which shows the site of the 'Nelson improvements' from another direction. The poster in the window is for Williams' Benefit featuring promenade concerts and fireworks at Rosherville Gardens on 15 September 1875. A benefit event for the musical director at Rosherville took place at the end of the performing season every September.
