A whole plate negative. Looking south-east from the Royal Terrace Pier at Gravesend showing Wates's Hotel with the Custom House on the right. Wates hotel is in poor condition with broken windows and slates missing from the roof. The premises were sold in 1882 and rebuilt as the Sailors' Home. The white painted hexagonal timber building is the custom lookout and the double entrance of the customs boat shed is on the right..
