The barge Connaught (1879) at the Coal Consumers' Company Wharf at Gravesend
A whole plate negative. The Coal Consumers' Company Wharf at Gravesend, with the iron stumpy rigged sailing barge 'Connaught' (1879) alongside. The view is looking west along the waterfront towards Clifton Marine Parade. The barge is seen from fine off her port bow and from well above deck level. It is low tide and she has been loading coal using a wooden chute from the quayside. The coal has not yet been trimmed and her crew are taking it easy while the photograph is being taken. The top of her sprit is out of the picture. Three swim headed stumpy barges are dried out in the background, two of them being on blocks. A vertical format image.
