Admiral Robert Phipps Hornby
A bound scrap book with a weak spine featuring mostly albumen prints, some pasted in and some slotted in.. The prints relate to the family life and naval career of Admiral Robert Phipps Hornby (1866-1956). There are also views of Venice, Malta, Syracuse, Canada and Central America. Maritime topics featured in the album include: Alexandra (1875), bombardment of Alexandria 1882, Groups at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, Salamis (1863), Helicon (1865), officers of Sans Pareil (1887) and officers of Terrible (1895), as well as images of torpedo boat jumping experimental boom and naval landing party exercises.

45 RNC Greenwich ca. 1887. A group of 11 young people, including Lt. R S Phipps Hornby.
46 RNC Greenwich ca. 1887. A group of about 75, various ages and seniority.
47. On board HMS ‘Salamis’ (1863) or ‘Helicon’ (1865) ca. 1878. A carefully posed casual group of 7 men, 4 ladies. 4 dogs and 1 pair of binoculars, all of the dogs apparently asleep.
48. The same group as 47, minus one of the men. Those identified are Lt. E J Phipps Hornby, Lady Hornby, Miss Phipps Hornby, Miss Essie Phipps Hornby and Miss Mary Phipps Hornby (later Mrs Fred Egerton).
55. Officers of HMS ‘Sans Pareil’ ca. 1893, 25 in number. Lt R S Phipps Hornby is identified, but the photo is rather faded.

67. View of what is now the entrance to the NMM (the old Neptune Hall) with a railing quite close to the building. Flamsteed House in the background.

74. Group of 24 young men, some hint of cricket, 19 identified including “RPH RN”.
85. Group of 2 men and 5 ladies. “RPH” now apparently a Lt. with over 8 years service.
86. HMS ‘Victoria’ (1887) “as last seen off Tripoli on 22.6 1893, sinking after collision with HMS ‘Camperdown’ (1885). HMS ‘Nile’ (1888) is also in the photo, taken from HMS ‘Collingwood’ (1882)
