Album relating to the career of Captain Roger Prideaux Selby, DSO, RN (1894-1976), part 3

A laced bound, photograph album with limp covers, all pasted in over 48 leaves plus some loose photographs.

This album contains photographs covering the period November 1925 to circa 1950, taken while Captain Selby was serving in HMS Dunedin (1918), HMS Valiant (1914), HMS Velox (1917) and HMS Esk (1934). He had been promoted to Lt Cdr 31 August 1924 and served as Gunnery Officer, HMS Dunedin (1918) seconded to the Royal New Zealand Navy, December 1925-February 1926. He then served as Gunnery Officer, HMS Valiant (1914) from May 1927 – April 1929. Selby was promoted to Commander, 30 June 1929 and after various courses at HMS President and HMS Victory he was Commanding Officer of HMS Velox (1917), 1933-34 and HMS Esk (1934), 1934-35. Included in the album are photographs of these ships. Topographical views include New Zealand, Salonika, Barcelona, Naples, Port Said, and Cyprus. There is a group of interesting photographs of deep diving trials held at Inverary, Royal Navy diving tender HMS Tedworth (1917), 1930-1931. There are group and individual photographs of naval officers and a few family photographs. Also included are photographs of the Normandy Landings. Captain Selby was First Assault Group Commander Sword Beach –operating from LCI 131 during the Normandy Landings. The National Archives references ADM 212/202 and ADM 315/1 are reports re the Deep Diving Trials and contain information on the divers in the photographs in this album.

ALB0083/47: Queen Sālote Tupou III (1900-1965) was the first queen and third monarch of Tonga (reigned 1918 to 1965). In this photo, she is shown formally closing a session of the Tongan parliament. This building, still in use today, was prefabricated in New Zealand and shipped to Nuku‘alofa, the Tongan capital, in 1894.

The majority of photographs have been captioned by Captain Selby.
