Component model; Main yard

Scale 1:24. A model of a 1st rate, 100 gun ship main yard made entirely in wood. The yard is circular in the mid section which then gradually tapers at both ends. At the extreme ends of the yard are two rectangular sections which form a shoulder, from which various rigging components are secured to and which also prevents them from moving along the yard. It has been stained and varnished with a natural wood finish and includes eighteen simulated iron hoops painted black spaced along the length of the yard. The model has been made to come apart in the mid section to show how the yard was made from various sizes and shapes of wood. There is also a slightly flat edge to the yard at the midsection which has been drilled to receive five small wooden dowels which may have connected it to a baseboard or a further section of shaped wood for the yard. At one end is a small ring and metal pin which was used to display it when in the South Kensington Museum.
