Photograph album of W. S. Lightfoot, Surgeon R.N.

Green leather bound album measuring 17” x 13” containing about 100 photographs taken by Surgeon Commander Lightfoot; also cuttings from Illustrated London News and other ephemera. Some pages are loose. A second folder contains 6 loose large format photographs and cuttings from Illustrated London News and from The Naval and Military Record.

The album contains photographs taken by Surgeon Commander William Spencer Lightfoot and consists of views of Smyrna, Syra, Batoum, Trebizond, Simope, Kerasun, Samsun, Constantinople, Bosphorous, Scutari, Salonika, Naples, Athens and Zanzibar. Also exterior and interior view of Haslar Hospital 1884/5. Ships include HMS Temeraire (1876), HMS Philomel (1890), HMS Illustrious (1896). There are also photographs of Turks, Greeks, Albanians and three large format photographs of young Arab women. Included also in the album are cuttings from The Graphic relating to the Turko-Russian War 1877-8 and to ‘Distressed Armenians’ 1897 and from The Naval and Military Record 1893 plus other ephemera. A blue folder holds loose photographs (6) and ephemera (3).

Dr Lightfoot served with the National Aid Society on the Lom, at Silistria and at Salonica from September 1877 to April 1878. He entered the Navy as a Surgeon March 31 1880, promoted to Staff Surgeon March 31 1892, Fleet Surgeon March 31 1896, Deputy-Inspector General of Hospitals and Fleets June 9 1904. He was surgeon on HMS Decoy at the bombardment of Alexandria for which he received the Egypt medal and Khedive Star. Also present at operations near Suakin in eastern Sudan 1884. He died December 14 1908.
