This album relates to the service of HMS Berwick (1926) while on the American and West-Indies Station. Included are photographs of New York, Bermuda, Azores, Halifax (Nova Scotia), Quebec, St Andrews (New Brunswick) , Montreal, St Johns (Newfoundland), Crner Brook (Newfoundland), Petsamo, Kirkenes.
Ships include RMS Queen Mary (1936), Empress of Britain (1931), Ark Royal (1937) and the German blockade runner Wolfsburg (1915). There are also photographs of the survivors of the Athenia (1923), of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on board and of the Chilean earthquake (1939).
The Kent class cruiser HMS Berwick was launched in 1926 and broken up in 1948. In 1939 she served on the American and West Indies Station. World War II service included hunting German raiders, the Norwegian campaign (1940), Operation Collar and Arctic convoys. She also engaged the Admiral Hipper in December 1940. It is possible that these albums originally belonged to musician C S Dressing as a Crossing the Line certificate issued to him on board HMS Renown on 21st March 1944 was found in one of the albums.
