Board of Trade Sea Gallantry Medal

Board of Trade Sea Gallantry Medal, bronze, with case of issue. Obverse: Head of Queen Victoria laureate (left). Below bust: 'V.R.' Legend: 'AWARDED BY THE BOARD OF TRADE FOR GALLANTRY IN SAVING LIFE'. Signed: 'W. WYON' on truncation. Reverse: Three men, one of whom is signalling to a rescuing life-boat in the distance and a woman with a baby, on a raft and a broken spar in a stormy sea. Inscribed on the edge: 'THOMAS COOPER (JUNIOR) WRECK OF THE "INDIAN CHIEF" ON THE 5TH-6TH JANUARY 1881'.

Thomas William Cooper (1848-1929) was a member of the crew of the Ramsgate lifeboat 'Bradford'. She went to the aid of the 'Indian Chief' wrecked on the Long Sand off Ramsgate on 5 January 1881. There were 11 survivors.
