Inscribed on the front paper is the following: "Sir Henry George Calcroft KCB from Woodford Pilkington M.Inst.C.E. Progress photographs of the new Lighthouse Works at Dondra Head and Welmaduwa Island, Ceylon erected by Woodford Pilkington, Resident Engineer. Whitehall Gardens July 9th 1890".
Photographs are of: Dondra Head light (a white 8-sided tower), height 49m; Barberyn light, Welmaduwa Island (white tower on the summit of the island), height 34m, although not yet identified; and another lighthouse, again not yet identified.
