12th Submarine Flotilla 1916-1919

A red/gold covered album containing 220 photographs glued in.

This album contains photographs relating to the 12th Submarine Flotilla (‘K’ Boats) and HMS Royal Arthur (1891), submarine depot ship at Rosyth, 1916-19. Ships include HM K3, K6, K7, K8, K15, HMS Fearless (1912) and German U-boats U70 and UC59, and SMS Deutschland (1915) and HMS Ithuriel (1916). There are many views of Scotland including Inverness and district, South Queensferry and the Caledonian Canal. There are also photographs of unidentified Sick Berth Attendants and a RN ambulance train. A few photographs have been removed from the album prior to its acquisition by the museum.

T H Woodward is possibly Thomas Henry Woodward born 11th July 1883 in Leicester and who entered the Royal Nay as a hostilities only rating in 1916. He was employed as a photographer in HMS Fearless and HMS Royal Arthur in 1918. The abbreviation SBR is also recorded on his service certificate which indicates he could also have served as a Sick Berth Reserve Attendant.
