The Wife of Captain William Hewett
Framed and glazed watercolour showing a three-quarters length portrait of the wife of Captain William Hewett, lost with HMS Fairy (1826) during the survey of the North Sea in 1840. The subject is standing in an interior, with a curtain on the left, and a balcony and classical column on the right. Ann Hewett died in 1888 and was buried in Brompton Cemetery, Fulham Road, London along with three of her children. The artist, Gregory, was from Plymouth, and a clerk's assistant and an assistant surveyor aboard HMS Fairy, and was also lost in the tragedy.
