Captain William Hewett

Framed and glazed watercolour showing a three-quarters length portrait of Captain William Hewett, lost with HMS Fairy (1826) during the survey of the North Sea in 1840. The subject is shown in uniform, leaning against a capstan and holding a telescope in his left hand. A handwritten note attached to the back of the frame states: "2 portraits of Admiral (Capt.) W. Hewell [sic] R.N. lost in Fairy on survey of North Sea 1840 Painted by George T. Gregory of Plymouth lost in Fairy 13 Nov. 1840". The captain's full-dress uniform shown is that of July 1830 to June 1843, when cuff colours in the full dress reverted to blue and collars to white.
Gregory, was a clerk's assistant and an assistant surveyor on board HMS Fairy.
