Album compiled by Engine Room Artificer Gilbert Adshead.

A red-brown cloth covered album containing photographs sellotaped in. The album was compiled by Engine Room Artificer Gilbert Adshead while serving on board HMS Lord Nelson (1906) and HMS Thisbe (1917) between 24th March 1913- 19th September 1917 and 27th November 1917 – 23rd February 1920. Ships include: HMS Lord Nelson 91906), HMS Thisbe (1917), HMS Stuart (1917), HMS Queen Elizabeth (1913), HMS Bulldog (1909) and HMS Triad (1909). There are also photographs of survivors from the hospital ship Britannic (1915) and U boats at Harwich,1919. Places include the Dardanelles, 1915-17, Salonika 1916 and Smyrna, 1920. Group photographs of officers and men (some Serbian) are also represented as well as concert parties (men in drag) and finally of course ships’ pets. All have been captioned by Mr Adshead.

Gilbert Adshead was born 30th May 1893 in Sydenham, South London. He trained as a boy artificer aboard HMS Tenedos at Chatham and HMS Indus at Devonport. He served in HMS Lord Nelson (1906) in the Home Fleet based at Portland, Devon and with the Mediterranean Fleet base at Mudros. He then served aboard HMS Thisbe (1917) with the Harwich Fleet, 1917-1919 and then in HMS Stuart (1918) at Malta and Constantinople, 1920-22.

Mr Adshead’s diary is with the Imperial War Museum as is a tape recorded interview with him.
