Cameroon Expeditionary Force 1915-1916
A red/brown cloth covered album with a damaged spine containing 142 photographs glued in and also some cuttings.
Some of the photographs have been copied, and there are negatives of No. D.2378-D.2397.
This album contains photographs relating to the Cameroon Expeditionary Force, 1915-1916. Ships include HMS Dwarf (1898), river gunboats HMS Vigilant, Alligator, and Crocodile
and HMPV Lowe. There are also photographs of European and African troops, Douala, now the capital of the Cameroons and various Government buildings.
The compiler of the album has been identified as Lt Cdr Philip V Kilgour in command of HMS Vigilant a Nigerian steam launch. (see Fuller papers FUL/11 held by NMM). Philip Vere Kilgour was born 12th October 1883 in Madras.. He entered the navy in 1897 and was promoted to Sub-Lt, 1902; Lieutenant 1904; Lieutenant Cdr 1914. He retired with the rank of Commander, 1923 and went on to be Inspector General of Coastguard, Northern Ireland.
At the start of World War I Germany possessed four colonies in Africa – Togoland, Cameroons, German South-West Africa and German East Africa. The British and French invaded the Cameroons in 1914 and a bitter battle was fought for the control of Douala which surrendered on 27th September 1914. The allied campaign in the Cameroons lasted until 1916. The photographs have been captioned up to page 32 after which Commander Kilgour seems to have run out of steam.
There are no acquisition details relating to this album but in 1965 Commander Kilgour donated three albums to the museum. Albums 379 and 380 relate to his service in HMS Triumph and presumably 309 is the third album.
