Peninsular & Oriental Steam Nav. Co - Ships of the Fleet 1892-1902
A photograph album with green board covers (both of which are off), containing 98 black and white photographs mounted one to a page. Inscribed on the upper cover in gilt letters is "File. Photographs. P.&.O.S.N.Co. Publicity Dept." The fly leaf shows photographs to be taken by Bedford Lemere & Co. 147, Strand, London W.C. (at least one is now in the Gould collection of negatives).
This is an album illustrating passenger accommodation in ships of the fleet 1881-88, and includes the following vessels: Rome (1881) in January 1892, Himalaya (1892) in July and August 1892, Caledonia (1894) in October 1894, Moldavia (1903) in September 1902 as it is being built, Mongolia (1903) in September 1902 as it is being built.
The album also includes Naval Exhibition, Liverpool, March 1892 (Rina Prentice thinks the album complier made a mistake as the photos are the same as the 1891 Chelsea Exhibition ones); P&O offices, Leadenhall Street, London, October and December 1893; board rooms, Leadenhall Street offices, London, July 1895; and also details of paintings affixed to the frontage of 126-128 Leadenhall Street, May 1894 (to be confirmed).
