Dish lid
Small circular, bone china dish lid, made for Sir George Nares' Arctic Expedition of 1875. It is white glazed and transfer-printed in black with an elaborate rope border and the badge of the expedition - a polar bear within a garter (on both lid and base). The garter is inscribed 'ARCTIC EXPEDITION 1875'. On the base and lid is printed 'DISCOVERY' ('HMS Discovery' 1874 was one of the expedition's two vessels). An anchor printed on the base and lid is inscribed 'ARCTIC EXPEDITION 1875', 'W.T.COPELAND AND SONS'.
