Vulcania (1928)

This is a photograph album with white cloth covered board covers with a maroon leather title panel to the upper cover with a gilt title. There are 112 black and white photographs mounted one to a page, and there are manscript captions on loose pieces of paper to some of the photographs. The photographs are by 'Luce'.
This is an album describing a voyage from Genoa to Berbera and back, 4 April 1942 to an unkonwn date in June 1942. This was one of three special voyages (4 April to an unkonwn date in August 1943) from Genoa to East Africa, via South Africa, to repatriate Italian women and children colonists. The photograph album, and accompanying lists of the ship's complement, relate to the first voyage (although this may have been an earlier voyage; a note in Pack 19 under HMS Tempest, per Commodore Dick "H.M. S/M UNA irresponsibly sank Italian tanker LUCANIA on 12.2.42 although the latter had been promised a safe passage to fuel VULCANIA on repatriation trip to Mombassa and back"), mentioned above. In addition there is a track chart which describes the second of these voyages which took place between October 1942 and January 1943.
A copy of a letter from the donor of the album J. W. D. Powell, explaining his acquisition of the album is enclosed.
