Captain E. W. E. Fellowes RN (3rd Baron Ailwyn)

This is a black cloth covered album containing 191 photographs glued in. The spine cover is missing.

This album relates to the naval service of Captain Fellowes on board HMS Alacrity (1885) on the China Station, 1911-12. There are views of Port Arthur, Wei-Hai-Wei, Tsingtau, Nanking, Peking and Shanghai. Ships represented include HMS Alacrity (1911), SS Kut Wo (1895) and French flagship Dupleix (1900) as well as Chinese war junks. There are group photographs of Alacrity’s officers and French and German troops.

On 10th October, the first of a series of revolutions began which overthrew the Manchu dynasty and which created the Republic of China although it failed to unify the country. The album contains photographs of both Chinese Imperial and revolutionary troops as well as the burning of Hankow and Shanghai in 1911 during the revolution.

Captain Eric William Edward Fellowes was born 24th November 1887 and died 23rd March 1976. He succeeded to the Barony, 30th August 1936. In 1942 he was a member of the British Parliamentary Mission to China. See Album 569 for a full summary of his career.
