buoyancy aid
Buoyancy aid formerly belonging to First Lieutenant Frank Gilbert MN (1885-1949). Not an official design. The item is canvas, padded with kapok, with long sleeves and pockets. No Board of Trade inspection stencils. Khaki-coloured cotton canvas jacket secured by a button on the collar and seven buttons down the front. The cuffs each have two buttons and a strap. There as a draw string round the bottom. Two straps with buckles go round the legs and another strap and buckle round the wearer's waist. The front of the garment has two battledress style button-down patch pockets with a pleat on the front of each. They are edged with tape. The buoyancy consists of four kapok-filled compartments on the front, and three on the back. The sleeves each have two small kapok-filled pockets. The garment is machine-sewn and has a chain at the back of the neck to hang it up.
