This is an album relating to the naval service of Captain Crane, 1929 and includes Greece, Belgrade, Vienna (including topography) and the following vessels: Greek submarines Proteus (1927), Delfin (1911), Katsonis (1926).
This album was compiled while Captain Crane was serving with the British Naval Mission in Greece in 1929 as their submarine expert. The photographs are predominantly topographical and places represented include Belgrade, Vienna and Greece. There are also photographs of the submarines Proteus (1927), Delfin (1911) and Katsonis (1926).
Henry Berwick Crane was born in 1894 and entered the Navy in 1907. He joined the submarine service as a sub lieutenant in 1915 and was to serve in submarines with only short breaks for general service until 1928. He was promoted Commander in 1929 and Captain in 1937. During WWII he commanded the cruiser HMS Birmingham – his last appointment was in command of the British Pacific Fleet Naval,Base in Australia with the rank of Commodore. In 1946 he was ADC to King George VI, was appointed CBE and retired from the Navy.
