Die Ebbe und Fluth auss einer flaschen Landt Karten furgestelt

Single sheet cylindrical projection world map. This illustration from Happel's periodical 'Relationes Curiosae', which related scholarly scientific work to a borader reading audience, is an important early representation of oceanographic phenomena. It illustrates Athanasius Kircher's idea that there are chasms in the depths of the sea into which the water flows, then percolates through the earth and up to the tops of mountains.
