Single sheet. Coloured manuscript drawn on vellum, mounted on card. Scale [circa 1:180,000 (bar)]. The bar scale is in miles. North is at 90 degrees. This is an ungraduated chart with rhumb lines, showing soundings and sandbanks and clearing lines.
By John Thornton at the Platt in the Minories 1682. John Thornton was a Thames School chartmaker, apprenticed to John Burston in 1656. From 1670 he collaborated with John Seller to produce The English Pilot, a printed sea atlas, and published his own Atlas Maritimus in 1685.
